Business Need / Purpose of Role

Fabricates wooden crates or boxes and packs such items as machinery, vehicles or other large or odd shaped products.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

Including but not limited to: 

  • Reads blueprints, shipping notices, other specifications and inspects product to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used, types of supports and braces
  • Lays out dimensions on materials with ruler, measuring tape and pencil
  • Saws materials to size
  • Assembles materials
  • Places product in container
  • Bolts heavy pieces to bottom of container or skid
  • Wraps and pads product with excelsior, paper or other packing material
  • Builds crate around large or odd-shaped articles
  • Nail cover on crate
  • Wraps ad tightens metal bands around crate
  • Attaches identification labels or stencils containing such information as shipping destination, weight and type of product contained onto crate
  • Weighs loaded crate
  • Moves container to shipping area then moves lumber, paper and other supplies to crating area
  • Sharpens saw blades
  • Ensures safety and accuracy of items packed

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.


Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American currency, weight measurement, volume and distance.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
