Reporting to the Director of Comminution Technology Group (CTG), the Senior Mechanical Designer (represents Weir Minerals Division Technology Group) is responsible for the designer activities for the research and development, design & augmentation of the mechanical & hydraulic systems and Sustainment for all Comminution Products. To achieve the agreed requirements, strategic and business objectives, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Complete other tasks assigned by supervisor and / or product lead engineer on time.
Responsible for planning their own work schedule to meet internal and external customer requirements
Provide support to complex technical presentations, guidance and support to internal and external customers on complex design configurations, problem resolutions and recommendations.
Build and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external decision makers (key customers and representatives, key sub-suppliers to ensure their ongoing support for Weir Minerals Division business objectives.
Participate on cross-functional teams to ensure the continuous, ongoing improvement of processes, methods, productivity and quality, while reducing costs.
Liaise with other departments to ensure designs comply with customer specifications and expectations.
Research new design practices and analyze, recommend, and implement.
Travel to job sites of comminution products installation or operation and monitor first hand new product performance against target. Resolve technical issues; make improvements to satisfy customer expectations.
Implement procedures and systems that will ensure protection for Weir Minerals’ intellectual property and deter replications
Keep manager and co-workers aware of pertinent issues and information warranting their knowledge, action and/or resolution.
Promote and maintain a flexible, cooperative, team oriented, and customer focused attitude within and between departments
Comply with all departmental and Company policies, procedures, and programs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
At least 8 to 10 years working experience in mechanical machine design in the fields of; Mining, Oil and Gas, Construction or Comminution equipment, or heavy industry is required.
High level of competency, to include but not be limited to, the use of the following engineering tools
Siemens GPDM / Teamcenter
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
Familiarity with good manufacturing and assembly processes for Comminution & Construction Equipment or similar is required.
Must have good commonsense based mechanical aptitude and understanding of general engineering principles; with documented hands on experience throughout their working career
Create very complex 3D models of components, subsystems and systems for similarly complex machine designs, utilizing industry standards and modeling practices. Ensuring efficient use of Weir Minerals Engineering Systems data and configuration management criteria is used.
Create and augment complex component, subsystem and system engineering drawings & assembly drawings to meet Comminution Technology Group, or similar, drafting standards.
Skilled in the use of common change management tools, principles and processes to include but not be limited to ECR/ECN/ECO and preferably Siemen’s GPDM PCN processes.
Skilled in the use of GD&T to produce cost effective engineered products and fabrications is required.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND WORK AIDS
Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as computer and job related software (Microsoft Office, SAP, scientific calculator, telephone, fax photocopier, etc. Detailed knowledge of NX, SolidWorks, ProE is required. Microsoft Visio, experience is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, general office environment, and travel situations. Moderate to loud noise.
When in the field, the individual will be subject to mineral processing facilities which can have sudden temperature changes, exposure to noise and fumes, exposure to dust and rocks that are being processed at the facility.
