Under the direction of VP of Engineering or Engineering Manager, this position is responsible for ensuring timely and satisfactory engineering support for DCO product design efforts, support for the Weir Minerals global marketing, manufacturing and operations functions as they relate to DCO product.
Acquisition of product and application knowledge will be essential to provide high level support for new product development, application engineering, project engineering, retro-fit/installation, maintenance and inventory management questions. Applying detailed engineering knowledge, based on an understanding of pump hydraulics and pump-system interaction will be required to design or improve products, enhance safety, and perform root cause analysis on failures or underperforming equipment, to enhance future growth.
Entry level of professional Engineering may be considered. Applies engineering skill to solve complex problems utilizing knowledge of customers and markets. Reviews design and documentation to ensure compliance with design criteria and standards. Understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal engineering.
The following represent various responsibilities these positions may be responsible for, depending on their assigned functional areas.
Assist manager in scheduling work required and set work priorities for Designers. Check and approve work carried out by Designers. No direct supervision.
Engineering specific duties will include: perform stress and strain calculations on pump and structural components, which may include: simplified bending analysis; localized bending control; torsional control; diagonal bending analysis; force vector analysis (i.e. drive elements); seismic loading; foundation loading; bearing life calculations; and/or critical speed computations. Central to the support of team will be use of FEA as required verify designs.
Review equipment configurations as they apply to proposal bids and generate design solutions/proposals to assist Projects and Sales Engineers.
Engineering specific duties further may include: Applying CFX computation fluid dynamics software along with pump hydraulic principles to evaluate pump performance and wear mechanisms. CFD efforts may support product design or research efforts of the global R&D pump teams.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documents, etc.
Some travel with exposure to adverse working conditions. Dependent on experience travel may be extensive during the first two years.
Keep Manager aware of pertinent issues and information warranting supervisor’s knowledge, action and/or resolution.
Maintain technical competency and remain current in technology and changes in the industry.
Promote and maintain a flexible, cooperative, team oriented, and customer focused attitude within and between departments.
Participate on cross-functional teams to ensure the continuous, ongoing improvement of processes, methods, productivity and quality, while reducing costs.

Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and two to five years of experience.

Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as computer (Microsoft Office & Lotus Notes, IBM System AS/400) and other related software, a keyboard, calculator, telephone, Fax, photocopier (blueprint and office). Use of field service equipment such as, tachometers, thermometers, dial indicators, tension testers, vibration monitors and occasional use of Shore hardness and Rockwell Hardness testers and hydrodynamic test loops.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, general office environment, and travel situations. Moderate to loud noise.
When in the field, the individual will be subject to power generation and mineral processing facilities which can have sudden temperature changes, exposure to noise and fumes, exposure to dust and slurries that are being processed at the facility.
