    Business Need / Purpose of Role

    Assists in coordinating activities and providing general leadership and guidance to workers in the machining group.  Responsible for training Machinists I, II, III, and IV.

    Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

    Including but not limited to:

    • Models and acts in accordance with the Weir Group Success Values and Behaviors
    • Champions safety initiatives; enforces safety rules and requirements
    • Develops a culture that works to achieve and maintain an accident free workplace
    • Train new and existing employees on department procedures, job specifications, and demonstrates use of equipment
    • Assists with interpreting of schematic drawings,  procedure changes, and work orders for workers
    • Confers with technical personnel and department supervisors to report and resolve any machining  problems
    • Understand customer contractual requirements
    • Escalates unresolved situations to their supervisor when appropriate
    • Reports substandard equipment performance to manager and/or maintenance personnel
    • Substitutes for absent workers and assists workers to alleviate work overload situations
    • Maintains the overall appearance/cleanliness of the department
    • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining  problems 
    • Other Machinist duties: Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
    • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, freed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control  media
    • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls of control media as required
    • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
    • Sets up and operates machine on trial run of machine to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
    • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms,  machines, and equipments, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance
    • Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
    • Measures, marks, selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
    • This job provides general guidance and leadership to other Machinists.
    • Understand, complete, and submit all required reports and/or department paperwork
    • Oversee department activities, revise work assignments, and assign duties to meet schedules production goals, or contract priorities when the manager is not present
    • Select personnel to plan work flow
    • Act as liaison with other departments as needed

    Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications


    High School Diploma or GED and five to ten years related experience in manufacturing environment with experience in leading other people.



    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


    Mathematical Skills:

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Machine shop environment.  Must be able to wear steel toed safety shoes and safety glasses. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
